Setting Up MetaMask

Over time, MetaMask has evolved to become one of the most popular cryptocurrency wallets and gateway platforms through which one can interact with blockchain-based applications. Be it your initiation into the world of cryptocurrencies or a further extension of digital asset management capabilities, MetaMask presents a secure and convenient vehicle. In this article, we will take you through the set-up process step by step from account creation in MetaMask down to making your first trade.

What is MetaMask?

MetaMask is a cryptocurrency wallet that enables users to interact directly with the Ethereum blockchain and dApps built on Ethereum from within a web browser or mobile device. It bridges the gap for users between traditional web browsers and blockchain technology by allowing them to manage digital assets more comfortably and also interact with the growing ecosystem of decentralized applications.

Step 1: Setting Up MetaMask

Browser Extension

  1. Go to the MetaMask website: If you want to start trying this wallet, then go to the official MetaMask website and click the “Download” button.
  2. Choose your browser: You can install MetaMask in Chrome, Firefox, Brave, and Edge. Go to your favorite browser option to install the MetaMask browser extension.
  3. Install the extension: Follow on-screen instructions that pop up on your screen to install the MetaMask extension in your browser.

Mobile Application

  1. Install the app: Open your device app store, and whether iOS or Android, either the App Store or Google Play, depending on your device, search and download “MetaMask”.
  2. Application installation: On your device, install the MetaMask mobile application.

Step 2: Create a MetaMask Wallet

Browser Extension

  1. Open MetaMask: At the toolbar of your browser, click on the MetaMask icon.
  2. Start: Click “Get started” to initialize your MetaMask wallet.
  3. Create Password: Enter your preferred password, which you will use for locking and unlocking your MetaMask wallet.
  4. Backup your key phrase: Write down the 12-word seed phrase provided to you from MetaMask. This is very important in restoring your wallet in case you forget the password and want to have access to your wallet using a different device.

Mobile Application

  1. Open MetaMask: Open your MetaMask on your device.
  2. Getting Started: Tap on “Create a new wallet”.
  3. Create Password: Type a strong password for your MetaMask wallet.
  4. Create a backup copy of the seed phrase: Now make a backup copy of the seed phrase: Fill in the basic 12-word phrase on-screen and store it in a safe place.

Step 3: Getting Familiar with MetaMask Interface

Once you are set with your MetaMask wallet, you will be taken through to the MetaMask interface. Below is a brief tour over its main features:

  • Account Balance: Here is where you will see how much Ethereum is in your wallet.
  • Send and Receive: Buttons through which you will be sending and receiving Ethereum and ERC-20 tokens.
  • Buy Cryptocurrencies: In some areas or jurisdictions, this allows you to directly purchase Ethereum or any other cryptocurrency through thhis wallet.
  • Assets: Provides a listing of your Ethereum and token assets.
  • Browser: Links into various decentralized applications, or dApps, with which you can use the MetaMask wallet.

Step 4: Send Your First Transaction

How to Send Ethereum or Tokens

  1. To access the “Send” tab: Click the “Send” button.

  2. Enter Recipient Address: You will be required to provide the Ethereum address of a recipient.

  3. Input the Amount: Fill in the amount of Ethereum or token you want to send.

  4. Confirm the Transaction: The transaction appears; hit “Confirm” to send the funds.

How to Receive Ethereum or Tokens

  1. Click the “Receive” Tab: Click on the “Receive” button.

  2. Share Your Address with Me: Copy your Ethereum address and send it to the sender.

Step 5: Configure Your Security Settings

Enable Two-Factor Authentication

  1. “Settings”: Tap on the user icon in the top right corner and tap “Settings.”
  2. Set up 2FA: Follow steps to enable two-factor authentication for extra security.

Backup and Restore

  • Keep your seed phrase in a safe place: Please store the original 12-word phrase in a safe location. This is required to recover your wallet if you lose access to your MetaMask account
